What's Google Adwords?...
Google Adwords ...
Because you are reading this, you know there are huge amounts of money to be made by marketing on the internet. You are wondering how the successful people do it and why you can't. It is not as hard as your think but you really do need some inside knowledge in order to use the whole system properly. It is as simple as that.
You cannot sell if you do not get traffic and you cannot get traffic unless people can easily find your site. You know through your own internet searches that you rarely go beyond the first page or two of your search results. Therefore, that is where your URL must be positioned in order to get people to visit your site. Gone are the easy and cheap days when you could simply create meta tags and expect search engines to magically pop your URL up in front of potential customers. You have to advertise now and that costs money.
It works this way:
- Customers type in search words (keywords) for the products they are looking for. These keywords are matched by Google's search engine to its database of adwords and a list of relevant websites is displayed.
- If you have paid Google for a certain adword that matches the customer's typed in keyword, your web site will be displayed among the first the customer will see. You have to bid with others for the use of this adword and, the more you are willing to pay, the higher up in the rankings your web site will be displayed. If you are not willing to pay to advertise on Google (or any other search engine), don't expect people to find your site.
Example: You want to market red widgets to customers searching for red widgets. You know that they will be typing in keywords such as red widgets, buy red widgets, red widgets supplier, etc. In order to ensure your page is displayed, you want to pay Google to advertise your site using these words. When you register these words with Google they are now called Adwords. (Advertising words) You will bid on on the use of the Adwords - red widgets, buy red widgets, red widgets supplier, etc. with other marketers.
- Now that you understand that you must pay Google for the use of certain adwords, the rest is knowing how to advertise properly. Advertising properly requires a two-pronged approach. Without this two-pronged approach, you are wasting your time and your money.
- Know which Adwords to bid for. (Which Keywords people are using)
- Know how to use Google advertising system (Google Adwords).
It is not rocket science and you do not need a PHD. You do, however, have to know your way around the system which includes terms like Click Through Ratio, Profitable Keywords, Finding Affiliate Programs, Dynamic Keyword Insertion, etc. Sounds like it might be over your head doesn't it. Well, it really isn't at all when you are taken through it step by step. Learn the little, insider details that make all the difference and use the immense power of Google Adwords to your advantage.
Beware of Get Rich Quick schemes that promise to make you instantly wealthy. Only you and your hard work will make you wealthy. What you need are the proper tools to help get you there. Keywords, Knowledge and Product are all essential parts of your marketing effort. Choose wisely and you are on your way to success.

Slideshow Software Reviews
General...
There are many, many slideshow programs out there and I have tried every one I could find. Some are stand alone programs while others come bundled in such programs as Nero and Roxio Media Creator. They do a passable, mediocre job. The result is a boring display of your photographs with little control over the output. I have narrowed the best down to two and two only. The are Codejam's Memories on TV and Photodex's Proshow Gold/Presenter. See reviews.
Memories on TV...
Codejam's Memories on TV is a delightfully easy to use and well featured program. It has many advantages over it's competitors such as great music control, face detection for auto-zooming on faces, masks and overlays for photos and video clips, Ken Burns motion effects, custom masks, a large array of clipart to add to your photos, output to Flash and high quality transitions. Along with creating a great looking show, MOT has a feature that even Photodex does not. You can create several separate shows at the same time along with their menus and burn them to a single disk. Memories on TV is the quickest and easiest of any program to use. With Photodex, you must create each show and save it. Then, you have to import each show into a project to burn. At $49.95,Memories on TV is probably the best deal out there. Codejam
Photodex Proshow...
Photodex's Proshow series comes in three offerings; Proshow, Proshow Gold and Proshow Presenter. Photodex has the most elegant and professional slideshow creation program available. The shows created with any of the Photodex programs are stunning. At 29.95 for the standard Proshow and $69.95 for the Proshow Gold, you recieve the most sofisticated slide software available. The program is very user friendly. Save to VCD, SVCD and DVD. You can create output for flash, screen savers, EXE, video devices and HTML. Proshow Presenter is the professional package and gives even more features and value. Absolute control over audo is a great plus. For the serious hobbiest or professional, Proshow Presenter is a great choice, although a tad expensive at $249.95. If you are a professional, however, I would go with nothing less than the best. Photodex has the number one slideshow software available. Photodex
Genealogy Software Review
General...
There has alway been a plethora of genealogy programs available stretching back to the days of DOS only. They were simple little databases with very limited printout options. There are many choices these days in Windows based programs but most of them are still limited in useability and output. These lesser programs including the likes of Brothers Keeper, The Master Genealogist, Ancestral Quest, PAF - Personal Ancestral File, Ancestral Quest and a few more are gnerally a waste of time. What you are looking for is ease of use, ability to import/export data, control over your reports, ability to add multi-media and backup creation. After trials of available programs, only two come near serving all needs. They are Family Tree Maker and Roots Magic. See Reviews.
Family Tree Maker...

Family Tree Maker has been around for many years and is one of the most popular programs used by genealogists. Although a fairly expense package, FTM usually came bundled with American Census disks and also has the ability of searching American Census online. FTM produces reasonable reports, imports data and provides most of what genealogy researchers are looking for. Years ago, I compared FTM with Family Origins and found that Family Origins was the better of the two. Family Origins ceased being updated and supported. Various companies such as Broderbund and Parson's Technology have markets these programs. Today, Family Tree Maker comes to you via Ancestry.com and would be my second choice in genealogy software. No longer bundled with the American Census CD's, it is available for $39.95 at Ancestry.com
Roots Magic...

A long time favourite among those who have used the programs was Family Origins. There simply was not another program gave you the ease of use and full functionality that you needed. Family Origins also gave you great looking output reports along with multi-media. Alas, Family Origins (which I have used since version 4) met it's demise after version 7. This left many of us gnashing our teeth but all is not lost. The same people who wrote Family Origins under contract, have now written a very, very similar product called Roots Magic. The switch from Family Origins to Roots Magic is seamless. You can simply import your old Family Origins data into Roots Magic. Roots Magic is very user friendly and a snap to use. At $29.95, Roots Magic is definitely my first choice. Available from Roots Magic.
The Complete Genealogy Reporter...
While this is not your typical "enter gedcom data" genealogy software. What it does is give the nicest looking reports of any genealogy software I have seen. You can output to text, PDF or build a terrific, professional-looking web site with just a few clicks. You have total control of the content. While FTM and Family Origins will do similiar operations, they do not produce to exceptional graphical quality of The Complete Genealogy Reporter.
With The Complete Genealogy Reporter, you import a gedcom before you produce the report. It comes bundled with Gedpad Pro. GedPad is an editor for GEDCOM files with full hyperlinking between related sections (individuals, families, sources, etc.). I highly recommend you download the trial version http://www.tcgr.bufton.org/
You won't be disappointed with your reports and a very good deal for $27.95. Building your gedcom with Family Origins and producing a report with The Complete Genealogy Reporter is an unbeatable combination.
Genealogy 101 - How to start out in genealogy...
Genealogy101
Most of us have is an insatiable curiosity about our family past. Who were they? What did they look like? What did they do for a living? Am I descended from royalty? In other words; where did I come from? One thing I can guarantee is that your family history will be interesting and, when your research is nearly complete, you will think it is a miracle that you are here at all. Your family undoubtedly has survived famine, disease, war and much more.
So, where do you start? I am going to assume that you are in North America and therefore the product of immigration. Let's also assume you want to do your research without any cost to you.
Start with a good old Google search of your family name and add the word genealogy. First, start with actual people that you know of and have information on. e.g. "Thomas Boutilier Genealogy". This can be a valuable way to search as you may have an unknown relative that has your "Thomas Boutilier" in their family tree and has published the information on the internet. If you can match the birth and death dates of their Thomas Boutilier, you may have just found a great source of family information that has already been researched. You will probably get search results from on-line forums also. Take a look at them all be prepared to invest some time.
Try dedicated genealogy research sites with the same query. Some of the best resources are the LDS or Mormon sites. You do not have to be a Mormon for your genealogy information to exist there. There are also LDS chapters in most major cities where you can go and do your research. They often have the information on microfiche. Once again, start with your actual family members that you have information on, going back as far as you can. There will be many on-line sites that you will find that want you to sign up or pay a fee. I would note these in case you want to go back to them later.
In North American genealogy, our ancestors often drifted back and forth across the border. Many eastern Americans are descended from immigrants who landed in Halifax in the 1750's. Some of those same settlers drifted to the US, back into Canada during the war of 1812 as United Empire Loyalists and then returned to the US many years later. For example let us take the name Roscoe. Most Roscoe descendants come from two brothers from Nova Scotia. One brother stayed in Nova Scotia while the other brother drifted through the United States starting small tent towns which became Roscoeville, Roscoe,NY and Roscoe,MN. So, don't count out cross border connections. Many Nova Scotians have New England ancestors who immigrated as Planters or United Empire Loyalists.
Spelling....This is important. Your family name may have changed many times throughout history; sometimes with each generation. Many of our immigrant ancestors could not ready or write. If they could, it may not have been in English. Therefore, they depended on local English speaking scribes to record family names during such events as births, deaths, marriages, etc. The people recording these names often spelled them as they heard them. Therefore, you will see the family name Eichel become Oickle, Oikle, Oicle over the years because of its German pronunciations "Oy-kel". Try to think of various ways that your family name could have been spelled in the past. Another example... In my family tree, one brother is recorded as a Clooney while his brother was recorded as a Cluney at birth. Conrads and Conrods are the same family. Keep an open mind.
Search your local government birth and death records. Example "Texas births and deaths" or "Texas Vital Statistics". Work your way back from there.
Join a forum that includes your family name and put out a request for family information. Search for "Jones genealogy forum". When asking for information, be specific as possible. Don't ask for information on Robert Jones. Ask for information on Robert Jones, father of so and so, born and died approx these dates, location, etc. Give others as much information as possible.
Pitfalls.... Don't accept other people's information as valid until you have checked it closely. Use it as a guide and not fact. Don't claim a family crest or coat of arms too quickly. Most coat of arms were given to a specific family and not just anyone who happened to have that family name.
*important.... When someone volunteers the time to help you, say "thank you". Be ready to help others. You will find genealogy lots of fun, you will meet new relatives who will become friends and, most importantly, it help fill that insatiable curiosity. For instance, I found that my great-grandmother (x7) Anna Maria von Ludwig was the last witch of Kleinheubach, Germany. She survived but her mother and brothers were all burned as witches. Genealogy may become your life long passion.
**Very important** To help prevent identity theft, do NOT post the vital stats of any living person on the internet or share it someone you do not know. (age, birth, etc.)
Here is a short list of sites that you can start with. The first link is my own personal site and, under the resources button there, you will find more links, both free and commercial. Have fun.
